| Report: | Good afternoon sports fans and welcome to another season of Hert's Div 1 Squash, we are 3 games in and the seconds are already 3 and 0! First up Harpenden, who have been forced to relocate due to club renovation 'issues' and now ply their trade at NHG St Albans, a solid 19pt haul with youngster Kylan making his debut, definitely one to watch. A first outing also for ex 1st team player Nick Mulvey aka, the 'Golden Retriever', albeit the plumper, less sprightly 2025 model. Next up the real NHG, and another 4-1 victory, great result from Lee 'The Wizard' Jemmett fresh from winning the Berko Masters, who overcame not only some dubious marking calls but also an awkward and triple jointed opponent. MOM went to young(ish) Will J, who proves once again that brawn can overcome brain, just, with a gritty win in 5, saving 4 match balls. Solid results from Matt D and the Skip, while Nick was given a free lesson by Rui, ouch! So, here we are, 1st v 2nd, The Rumble in the Stortford Jungle, Ali v Foreman, Creed v Rocky, we have all watched the movie, now we saw it in real life, could we live the dream, would parody overcome reality, was this an allegory for our time? Who even knows what any of this means.. Anyway, first on, Matt 'One knee, one elbow keep moving' Delaney against the swarthy, hirsute Christopher 'meal deal Wearden, nip and tuck, bob and weave, duck and dive, a frantic, nervy, scrappy 3-2, 1up 2nd's. next up Will who literally blew his opponent off court, never giving the 11 year old any time to settle, let alone finish his home work. 2up 2nd's. Will J put in a valiant performance against the classy Pennel, who seems to be wearing a cushion under his T shirt, anyway, solid from the leftie, though a point for the 2nds! Cousins v Brown was like watching the future play the past, an even fitter version of the former, some grueling rallies with both players covering literally every inch of the newly sanded floor, having to prop themselves up against the freshly painted walls between points. another point to the 2nds. Finally the two heavyweights slugging it out, incredible skill and shots on display with lots of 'oohs' and 'aahhs' from the crowd, the new season Jemmett is literally half the man he was last year and is looking lithe. Nick suffering from 'bar drinkers knee' wasn't moving well though his shots kept him in the contest. An excellent 3-2 win from Lee and a fine 3-2 win for the team, to keep them top of the league. Next up Radlett, with talk of Kris Davis making his long awaited return...wait i've just seen a pig fly.. That's all folks! |
